Sexual Assault and rape cases are increasing day by day all over the world. Children, adults, old people and even newborns are not safe. Few days back I saw a friend’s post on facebook about how worried she is as a mom of a girl. I read the entire post and I was able to relate to every single word she wrote and then I thought I never saw posts like these from parents of a boy. Does increasing Rape crime is none of their concern?

I am sharing the fb post that made me writing this post at first place. Asked my friend and she gave me permission to share her post here:

I have a daughter too. I am worried about her well being and I want to protect her from all evil things. ’Rape’ , ‘sexual assault’ – even saying these words is stressful and thinking about the victims is profoundly traumatic. But is this fear valid only for girl parents? Why we always think about protecting our girls, push boundaries around them and we leave rapists in open? What happens to the parents when they come to know that their son is a rapist? Do they feel as devastating as the victim’s parents? When a girl leaves home at night, parents are worried with thousands of haunting thoughts does this happen when a boy leaves at night too? Yes boy parents are also worried about mishappenings but Rape is not one of them.

I was raised in a conservative family and I followed every rule I was told till the time I was home. But now I realize that those rules were only for me and my sister. My brother didn’t have to stay home at nights. He doesn’t have to think what he is wearing. So the point here is: we train our girls to be safe from the time they are born, but we don’t bother talking to our boys about consent. We spend more time teaching our daughters to avoid being a rape victim than teaching our sons not to become rapist. Short skirt, being drunk, flirting, roaming around at nights and the list of excuses is long enough to blame the victims. But the only cause of rape is ‘Rapist’.

Rape and assault are inevitable forces. We cannot change the world but we are responsible for raising kind and generous kids. It must be difficult to talk to your kids about rape but it’s critically important. Teaching girls to be safe is not enough because an infant cannot protect herself. Parents should talk to their boys about respecting women and make them understand that assault is not justified in any damn situation. Parents of a boy should be confident that they have raised a good human being who respects women. Start teaching at an early age and remember that by teaching a girl we are saving only one girl, but by teaching a boy we might save many.

Parents, lets share the fear and make this world a better place to live TOGETHER!
